Republic Services/BFI Half Moon Bay Approves New Five-Year Deal 1/3/25

Half Moon Bay, CA – January 3, 2025 – The Republic Services/BFI Half Moon Bay eleven-person bargaining unit, which provides recycling, waste collection, and organics services for residential and commercial accounts in Half Moon Bay and operates out of the BFI Ox Mountain Sanitary Landfill, ratified a new five-year deal on January 2, 2025. The agreement passed with overwhelming support, receiving only one opposing vote.

In line with recent contract victories achieved by Teamsters Local 350, this new agreement delivers the most lucrative economic package in the unit’s history. Highlights include an initial wage increase of over 8% in the first year, significantly outpacing the current Consumer Price Index (CPI). The deal not only maintains the area standard but also sets a benchmark for wage compensation in San Mateo County by 2029. Additional improvements include substantial pension increases, enhanced worker protection language, and provisions for pension contributions during periods when employees are on workers’ compensation.

“I was extremely excited to present this tentative agreement, now ratified, to this small but mighty group because they undoubtedly deserve it,” said lead negotiator and President Robert Sandoval. “We refused to let the size of this unit be used as a reason to diminish our expectations and goals. I am proud to say that we achieved everything we set out to accomplish, building upon the legacy contracts that came before us to benefit our membership.”

Elected negotiating committee member and shop steward Jorge Cruz expressed his enthusiasm about the process and the outcome, stating, “Working alongside President Sandoval during these past few months was an amazing experience. This was my first time participating in our unit’s collective bargaining agreement negotiations. Before we began, Robert sat us down and truly listened to our unit’s values. Throughout the negotiations, it was clear he heard us loud and clear. He never wavered from our priorities. I speak for my unit when I say we’re incredibly grateful to Local 350 and their business agents for securing what I believe is the best contract I’ve seen in 20 years.”

Cruz added, “If you had the pleasure of knowing Robert’s grandfather, former Secretary-Treasurer Bob Morales, you’d see that they are cut from the same cloth. They both stand firmly for the backbone of this country—the hard-working membership.”

Teamsters Local 350 now proudly holds the distinction of representing the nation’s top three most lucrative Republic Services contracts. These include agreements with Republic Services/Allied Waste Services of Santa Clara, Republic Services/BFI Half Moon Bay, and Republic Services/Allied Waste Services of Daly City.

Chartered on October 8, 1936, Teamsters Local 350 represents members throughout San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara and San Benito Counties who work in the public sector, the solid waste and recycling industry, the laundry industry, and other various trades.
